Не думай о секундах свысока...
Feb. 9th, 2025 03:48 pmСегодня я узнал, что слово moment может означать не только "неопределенно-малый промежуток времени", а также и вполне определенный, примерно полторы минуты:
†2.2 As the name of a definite measure of time. a.2.a In mediæval reckoning, the tenth part of a ‘point’ (see point n.1 A. 10), the fortieth or the fiftieth part of an hour. b.2.b With reference to Rabbinical modes of computation (repr. Heb. ˈḥēleq): see quot. 1625. c.2.c In the 17–18th c. occas. used for second. Obs.
a. 1398 Trevisa Barth. De P.R. ix. ix. (1495), And a day [contains] foure quadrantes. And a quadrant conteynyth syxe houres. And an houre foure poyntes. And a poynt .x. momentes. And a moment twelue vnces. And an vnce seuen and fourty attomos. (OED)
См. также point, значение 10a:
†10.A.III.10 In mediæval measurement of time: The fourth (or according to some, the fifth) part of an hour. (See atom n. 7.) Obs.
См. также atom:
Of time. (Already in Gr. ἄτοµος (1 Cor. xv. 22), L. atomus = ‘twinkling of an eye,’ and regularly fixed in value in med.L.; see Du Cange.)
†7.III.7 The smallest mediæval measure of time; = 15/94 of a second. Obs.
According to the table of Papias in Du Cange—
47 atoms of time = 1 ounce = 7½ seconds (modern)
8 ounces = 1 ostent = 1 minute ”
1½ ostents = 1 moment = 1½ minutes ”
2⅔ moments = 1 part = 4 minutes ”
1½ parts (or 4 moments) = 1 minute = 6 minutes ”
2 minutes = 1 point =12 minutes ”
5 points = 1 hour = 1 hour ”
Thus an hour was equal to either 5 points, 10 minutes, 15 parts, 40 moments, 60 ostents, 480 ounces, or 22560 atoms.
Короче, спасибо тому, кто внес это значение moment в словарь "Мультитран". :-)
